Japan's digital nomad visa (up to six months) is treated as a short stay and issues no residence card, which puts you in the same bucket as tourists. The realistic setups are a high-capacity travel eSIM, or Mobal and Sakura's visitor plans.

What You Can Sign Depends on Your Status
Eligibility for Japanese monthly SIM plans is not about how long you stay; it is about whether you hold a residence card.
- Residence card (work, spouse, business manager visas)Every resident plan is available. The rest of this site applies to you as-is.
- Digital nomad visa (up to 6 months)Classified as a temporary stay; no residence card is issued. Monthly plans are closed to you, and your options are the visitor ones.

How Much Data Remote Work Needs
A video call burns roughly 1 to 2GB per hour. Ten hours of meetings a week is 40 to 80GB a month from calls alone. Even with hotel and coworking Wi-Fi carrying the main load, budget 20 to 30GB of mobile data, and more if cafe sessions and tethering are your normal.
The 3GB and 5GB tourist plans will not survive contact with your calendar. Nomad data planning starts with abandoning tourist-sized instincts.

Setups Without a Residence Card

- Mobal / Sakura visitor plansTake this route when you need an actual Japanese number: local service registrations, restaurants calling to confirm bookings. Foreign cards accepted.
- Book accommodation for its Wi-FiFor month-long stays, checking measured Wi-Fi speeds in reviews before booking is quietly the biggest cost saver of all.

With a Residence Card
If you live in Japan on a work or spouse visa and simply work from anywhere, the field opens up. For data-heavy workstyles, the standards are Rakuten Mobile unlimited (3,278 yen) or ahamo Omori (110GB, 4,950 yen). City-centered life favors Rakuten's unlimited; frequent rural movement favors the docomo network under ahamo Omori.
